Katy Perry says she isn’t “calling out any one person” on her upcoming album, Brave, and that includes Taylor Swift.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Perry is asked if the album addresses rumors that Swift’s “Bad Blood” song is about her. “Well that’s not my question to answer — if it’s about me,” she says. “I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person.”
Perry further defends the message of Brave. “One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that,” she explains. “Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period, end of story.”
“But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that. OK, honey. We got to keep it real, honey,” she continues. “This record is not about anyone else! This record is about me being seen and heard so that I can see and hear everyone else! It’s not even about me! It’s about everything that I see out there that I digest.”
Perry adds, “I think there’s a healing in it for me and vulnerability. If people want to connect and be healed and feel vulnerable and feel empowered and strong, God bless and here it is.”
In a 2015 interview with the Telegraph, Swift vowed to never, ever speak about the alleged feud between herself and Perry. “I’m not giving them anything to write about,” she said. “I’m never going to talk about her in my interview. It’s not going to happen.”
However, the 27-year-old “Shake It Off” singer did add that she isn’t afraid to make a few enemies. “It’s not real if someone appears to never have any issues with anyone. I have my friends. I have enemies,” she admitted. “I’m not nice all the time, but I try not to be carelessly rude to people who don’t deserve it.”
That same year, Swift was also adamant in another interview that she never claimed “Bad Blood” was about Perry. “I never said anything that would point a finger in the specific direction of one specific person, and I can sleep at night knowing that,” she told GQ. “I don’t necessarily care who people think it’s about. I just needed to divert them away from the easiest target. It doesn’t point to any one person or any one situation.”
